The New Song We Sing
I waited patiently for the Lord and He inclined to me, and heard my cry. He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay; and He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm. And He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; many will see and fear, and will trust in the Lord. Psalm 40:1-3
In this broken world, we are handed things that we would rather not receive...
- a health diagnosis
- a layoff on a job
- rejection, betrayal - whether it be a spouse, one's child, or friend
- death to a dream, the loss of a loved one
You put in your hard and you know the wrestle, the crying out to God, the pit of destruction, the miry clay.
Waiting patiently is not antsy or twiddling your thumbs, it actually means intently. We look to Him, the One who can rescue.
The issue is, our rescue may not look anything like we humans think it should. Our perspective is so different and our framework often not the ways of God.
For instance, our definition of good gets quite the smack in the midst of our hard and we wonder "why?" God would allow it. Our human minds wrestle, trying to redefine and reframe what we once thought was goodness to make space for God's definition of good.
God's definition of beauty is not necessarily perfection. It more often includes brokenness. Our human minds again wrestle with how beauty comes out of the hard, the broken, the twisted and yet it does.
It's God.
We wait, intently and He inclines toward you and me; hearing our cries! Oh, and He pulls us up. Up and out of the dark, the miry gunk and sets us on a rock, He Himself, the Rock. His truths ground us, giving us a firm foundation to take the next step. His truths make our steps firm.
Oh, how I love this!
And then. Then, the miracle of a new song! We can sing of His goodness, His faithful love, His daily manna grace and there is so much more of who He is. He is our Redeemer, redeeming the broken to give us a new song to sing. It's a song sung because we have learned to know the One who saves and redeems.
Then there is another result - others will see Jesus and want to know Him and praise Him.
Friend, I don't know what you're walking through right now, may I whisper, Jesus to you... turn your face towards Him, intently and wait as He inclines Himself towards you. I pray for your faith. If it's too weak to believe, I pray you have the courage to look towards Him; for He will come and He will set your feet on the Rock, Himself and His truths will give you a secure step. Maybe not today, but some day, some day you will have a new song, a different song to sing and it will be glorious and it will point others to Him!
